A regional turboprop plane carrying 62 passengers crashed near São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday, resulting in the tragic loss of everyone on board, according to local officials. Footage shared on social media showed the ATR-made aircraft spinning out of control before descending behind a cluster of trees near residential areas, followed by a significant plume of black smoke. City authorities in Valinhos, close to Vinhedo, confirmed that there were no survivors and that only one house in a local condominium complex sustained damage, with no injuries reported among the residents.
Speaking at an event shortly after the crash, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his sorrow and called for a minute of silence in memory of the victims. The airline Voepass, which operated the plane, stated that the aircraft had departed from Cascavel in Paraná and was en route to São Paulo’s main international airport before it crashed in the town of Vinhedo, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of São Paulo. The airline, which is not publicly listed, said it could not yet provide further details regarding the cause of the crash, involving a plane registered as PS-VPB.
