In the midst of the investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, the CBI has summoned four doctors for questioning. The 31-year-old woman’s body was discovered in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of the college early Friday morning. Authorities believe the incident occurred between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. The autopsy revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered. She sustained injuries to her face, nails, belly, left leg, neck, right hand, and lips, and there was bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. The crime has sparked widespread protests across the country, with doctors demanding a full investigation and justice for the victim. In response, Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) in Delhi are organizing a joint protest march from Nirman Bhavan on Friday, August 16, starting at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) held an emergency meeting on Thursday, deciding to hold a candlelight vigil at India Gate at 5 p.m. the same day. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also announced a protest rally on Saturday, August 17, to call for justice for the victim. In the latest developments, one suspect, identified as Sanjoy Roy, has been arrested. Roy, a civic volunteer frequently seen at RG Kar Medical College, was taken into custody on Saturday and is now in police custody for 14 days under charges of rape and murder. Investigators allege that Roy fatally strangled and smothered the doctor after assaulting her. In the wake of the incident, doctors across the country suspended non-emergency services but resumed after discussions with BJP leader JP Nadda. On Wednesday, the CBI officially took over the investigation from Kolkata police, and a team of senior officials, including medical and forensic experts, arrived in Kolkata to lead the inquiry. In a related incident, a group of unidentified men vandalized property at RG Kar Medical College on Thursday, amid ongoing protests by junior doctors demanding justice. The attack occurred during a “Reclaim the Night” protest led by women. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has accused “TMC goons,” allegedly sent by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of orchestrating the vandalism. West Bengal is gearing up for a tense Friday as a potential shutdown looms, with separate protests planned by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and opposition parties, including the BJP and CPM. These demonstrations center around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate resident doctor on August 9, which has sparked outrage across the country. Kolkata police have so far arrested 19 individuals in connection with the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital. In response to the tragedy, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared a 24-hour shutdown of non-emergency services. Speaking about the tragedy, the victim’s father recalled that his daughter had left for duty around 8:10 a.m. on the day of the incident. She was working in the OPD and last spoke to her mother at approximately 11:15 p.m. That morning, when his wife tried calling her, the phone rang but went unanswered—by then, their daughter had already passed away. He expressed his concern over the fact that from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m., despite being an on-duty doctor, no one had sought her out. He stated that while his daughter is gone, the people protesting in the streets are like his own children. He added, “Though my daughter is no longer with us, I now stand with the crores of children supporting us. She had faced challenges in college, and the entire department is now under suspicion. Smriti Irani, strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the protest march organized on Friday for the Kolkata hospital murder victim. Irani questioned Banerjee’s stance, asking, “Who is she protesting against, herself?” while expressing concern over the state’s law and order situation.
Irani responded to Banerjee’s demand that the CBI expedite the investigation and ensure the guilty are punished by Sunday, questioning the urgency of the CM’s request. “Why is she in such a hurry? Does the Chief Minister of Bengal want to ensure that investigations are not thoroughly completed?” the former minister remarked.
Irani also cast doubt on the specifics of the crime, asking if one person alone could have committed such a heinous act. “Was it possible that one person raped that woman, broke her legs, hands, gouged out her eyes, and inflicted all these injuries, and yet no one heard her screams? Could this entire crime have been carried out by one individual?” she asked, expressing her outrage and calling for justice.
We stand with everyone who is protesting for justice.”
